Every day - I get asked by people if identity theft is something they should worry about, and I'm always quick to say yes, ID theft is definitely something you should worry about because "it happens all the time, and it could happen to you too. Like it or not, identity thieves are lurking around every corner, virtual or not. Sure, ID theft happens a lot on the World Wide Web but it can also happen any where you use personal, and financial credentials.
Something else people don't often realize is that identity theft can occur among "friends" and relatives. Yup, it's happened more than once that when an individual's identity gets hijacked it's not by a complete stranger but by a trusted friend or relative. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you can't trust anybody but I am saying you can't trust just anybody. Yeah, maybe you think you can, until they assume your identity and ruin your life by racking up huge bills, and defaulting on their (your) credit obligations. |

Life as we know it today, takes place at “the speed of identity” whether we’re along for the ride or not. It’s up to you to protect yourself from everyone who wants to be…yourself. Do the “real you” a favor and put Identity theft protection in place but hire a service with as many of the following qualities as you can:
Credit fraud alerts – Requested on your behalf with the major credit bureaus
Credit Reports - Ordered on your behalf by the ID protection service, and sent directly to you.
Credit locks – If you (or someone posing as you) tries to apply for credit, you will get a call to validate the process. If it’s you then the transaction will continue. If it’s not you it will be halted.
Junk mail restrictions – You will be removed from junk mail lists, and save a few trees in the process.
Pre-approved credit offer blocking – These credit card offers are one of the easiest ways for identity thieves to step into your financial shoes and start living (destroying) your life.
The services ID protection firms offer can vary greatly, and so does the cost of protection but when all is said and done you should consider your identity as being priceless. After all, there is only one you. Let’s keep it that way! |
